Obituary for James Clifton

“The rumors of my departure are not greatly exaggerated…”

James Newel Clifton, 85, of Cypress Texas, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2016, surrounded by loved ones.

Jim was born on October 18, 1930, in Wellington, Texas, to Tracy and Faye Roach Clifton, and spent his childhood years, along with his sister Lea, in Wellington, Childress, and Amarillo.
After graduating from Amarillo High School in 1949 and attending George Washington University in Washington DC in 1950, Jim enlisted in the US Army and served in Korea, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1953. He completed his BBA at West Texas State University in 1956.

Later that year he married Mary McMasters, and had three daughters: Anne Elizabeth, Martha Jeannette, and Jane Marie. His career at Natural Gas Pipeline/Midcon took the family all over Texas and as far as Chicago, before they settled permanently in Cypress, Texas, in the early 70s. He retired from Midcon in 1986, and married Mary Yates in 1990. Jim and Mary were the social hub of their Longwood neighborhood, and Jim was a constant fixture, often seen riding his recumbent bike with their dogs Veni and Dolly throughout the subdivision.

Jim is survived by his wife Mary; daughters Anne Hebert and husband David; Martha Campbell and husband Richard; and his grandson Austen Rauch. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Lea Orr de Salinas, and his youngest daughter Jane.

A memorial celebrating Jim’s extraordinary life will be in October, 2016.
